Fitness Programs (May)

Note: These classes are not meant to replace any medical care.  Please check with your physician or medical practitioner before participating in any exercise class. Registering for these classes states that you agree that neither the Edward King House Senior Center, nor its trustees, representatives,
employees, contractors and agents may be held liable in any way for an occurrence in connection with any activity which may result in injury, harm or other damages to the registrant or members of our organization and guests, invited or not.
Each class is sold in monthly bundles.  Refunds are not available.

Tuesdays

Pilates with Kathy from ShipShape (on Zoom) at 9am
Its muscle-strengthening benefits mean that it is also very beneficial for over 50s. That’s because, as you get older, you start to lose muscle mass & engaging with a regular Pilates routine will help strengthen those muscles in the long-term. Balance , Breath and Movement with Kathy from ShipShape (on Zoom) at 10am
Do you want to maintain or improve your mobility & strength? Is loss of balance and falling a concern? This program assesses your current abilities & incorporates balance, stretching, & strengthening movements to increase mind/body awareness. Must have camera. No admittance after 10:10. May Dates: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30

Silver Age Chair Yoga with Carmen (in-person/indoors) at 10:30am
Silver Age Chair Yoga is a program designed to meet the special health needs of older adults. Safely participate at your own level of comfort. This is a gentle introduction to chair yoga. Seated chair postures as well as chair supported standing postures will be practiced. Participants must bring their own yoga mat. May Dates: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30

Boxing Fitness with Karen (in-person/indoors)  at 10am
Throwing punches is a fun way to stay strong and fit at any age, but it is especially beneficial for older adults. Come get moving with professional boxer Karen Dulin from Newport Boxfit. Boxing moves are great for cognitive function. May Dates: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30

Keep Your Independence With Tommy @Donovan Manor (In Person/indoors) at 11:15am
Keep Your Independence through easy, fun movements designed to help you manage: stairs, chairs, cars, walking, balance and mind/body connections. This program is being offered at Donovan Manor in Newport. May Dates: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30

Chair Yoga with Lynne (on Zoom) at 11am
Chair Yoga via Zoom is a good opportunity to try it out or return to your practice; in your own home. Movement and de-stressing will be key to these sessions. Must have camera on and be able to see and be seen by instructor. Participants will not be admitted after 11:10am. May Dates: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/30 NO CLASS ON 5/23

Vinyasa Yoga with Jessica In Person (Tuesday) at 6pm 

A slightly vigorous sequence with standing postures, balancing poses, stretching and activating the lower abdomen and back. All levels of yoga participants welcome. Participants are required to bring their own mat. May Dates: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30

Wednesdays

Chair Yoga Dance with Carmen (IN PERSON) Wednesday at 9am NEW** 

This class is full of Moving, Swinging, and Jiving. Get your groove on as we have some fun. Chair Yoga Dance is done Sitting or Standing near a chair and blends yoga movement synchronized with a music soundtrack and is a whole lot of fun. Music from all eras and genres like pop, western, Motown and lots more.  Participants must bring their own yoga mat.  May Dates: 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31

Intermediate Yoga with Andrea (in-person/indoors)  at 9am
It is necessary to have some experience with yoga before you take intermediate yoga. Continue to explore the fundamentals as you learn to breathe and move deeply from within. Practice light movements with consciousness to build strength, balance, and flexibility and inner peace. May Dates: 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5,31

Strength and Mobility with Cam (In-Person/indoors) at 10am

This intermediate level class can be adapted to accommodate different needs and capabilities. It focuses on light strength training to build up muscular strength with balance and mobility work. The intervals are slowly paced with minimal up and down movement. Please bring light weights and a yoga mat. May Dates: 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31

Tai Chi with Kenji (in-person/outdoors) at 10:30am   
Tai Chi is a slow and gentle exercise that is suitable for older adults, even if they are managing chronic conditions. It offers the benefits of flexibility, muscle strengthening, and endurance training. Tai Chi can improve the health of seniors without worsening existing impairments. May Dates: 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31 Class held outside weather permitting.

The Alexander Technique with Mara (in-person/indoors) at 1pm
The Alexander Technique addresses posture, poise and pain relief. It teaches you how to think differently about how you move and carry yourself. You don’t need any physical skill, just an open and curious mind. Must be fully vaccinated to participate. May Dates: 5/4, 5/11, 5/18, 5/25, 6/1
