Brush Up Your Shakespeare! Reading Shakespeare’s plays with Eileen Warburton. The Tragical History of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark (c. 1601)

The most quoted, the most popular, the most puzzling, and —arguably—the most challenging of William Shakespeare’s great plays is Hamlet. It’s an old- fashioned revenge tragedy, wrapped up in a nearly modern existential drama, and one of the most brilliant character studies ever written.

Our discussions will take place during each 2-hour Zoom session over 5 weeks. As always, however, the success of the Zooms will depend on the preparation of the participants. Everyone will read the play. Each participant will watch the play—act by act—from the RSC 2009 film with a young David Tennant as Hamlet and the ageless Patrick Stewart as Claudius. In addition, the instructor will prepare a video for each act, as well as an introductory video. Eileen Warburton will guide each discussion with questions and context.

The instructor, Eileen Warburton, PhD. has been a theatre critic, a college English teacher, Producer for the Rhode Island Shakespeare Theatre, and Humanities Scholar for 2nd Story Theatre. She has presented classic literature courses at the Edward King House as well as online Shakespeare courses.
